No it wouldn’t be rude, but who cares about this pollution bull. We should do it because it will be a lot cheaper and less time consuming.

    I don’t think so.

Actually, that seems like a great idea. It would cut down on the pollution they cause.

the big concern would be security. . . often sensitive subjects are discussed at meetings. . . you don’t really want that just broadcast through the air. . .

you could try and make it secure, but hackers always find a way. . .

I’m sure they do, for some things, but for others it’s better to let people walk around and shake hands.

Sure, you could attend an online church and get all the same sermons, but it’s not really the same without the pot lucks.

Most business is accomplished over the telephone/internet these days, but ask any salesman and they’ll tell you never to underestimate the value of face time.

Didn’t you learn Anything from Comics?

If you video conference, Evil Villains will hi-jack the frequency, hold us hostage, and broadcast their own evil message.

Rude? It would be down right Dangerous.

It’s not that it would be RUDE, it’s that it would be less effective.

The technology is far from perfect. AND there’s the lag. It’s harder to have the highest-quality discussion with those little lags happening when everyone speaks.

Also, teleconferencing wouldn’t allow the small groups and pairs of people going off and coming to agreements. (For instance, at the first G-8 meeting of his presidency, Obama was able to talk to the head of China, one-on-one, then the head of France, then get them togther to agree on an issue that was a sticking point between them, that would have halted progress for the meeting as a whole. )

Teleconferences are also limited to specific times and places. As everyone who has ever gone to real conferences knows, it’s the networking and discussion between sessions and during meals that are the most productive times.

I see a lot of people here making a big deal about their flying to the meeting. Anyone who thinks that’s any more than a very tiny percent of pollution the entire human race causes in a year is a person completely lacking CLUE.

They need to get together, talk together, break off into any ad hoc groupings they need to at will, and generally hang out together. Preventing all this isn’t a matter of politeness, but of necessity.
