I was reading ‘A heartbreaking work of staggering genius” when I had Jury duty one time. I got out of the Jury duty because they asked what I was reading, and if I had any bumber stickers. At the time I had several, but the one I chose was a quote. “The problems we face will not be solved by the minds that created them” Albert Einstein
    LOL thought that was interesting.

if we are talking opening lines I remember one that stuck in my head. . . it was a pilot episode of a small tv show Roswell and it goes: “I am Liz Parker and three days ago I died. . . after that, things got weird. ” I just thought that was an awsome way to open a show and the series!

by the way the riddle is driving me crazy! I’ve been here for over four HOURS and I am getting to the point of pulling my hair out of my head!

    Hey Melissa!

I love all of the opening lines you read! Pride & Prejudice, Sunday in the Park with George and Paper Towns especially!

I was wondering, are you going to talk about Anthony Rapp’s memoir , “Without You” sometime? I just so happened to read it this week, and I noticed that your name was in the acknowledgments. :-D

    Call me Ishmael.

I might not be a book, but the opening line to Studio Gibli’s ‘Grave of the Fireflies’

“September 21, 1945, that was the night I died”

It truley has to be one of the greatest and most poinent openings to a film ever

Also Phillip Pulman’s ‘The Butterfly Tatto’ (The White Mercedes)

“Chris Marshall met the girl he was going to kill on a warm Oxford evening. . . . ”

    Another amazing and shocking opening

Midnights children! I had to read it this year for 11 IB english, extremely hard, but at the end when studying it, you’re like, ‘this guy is a genius!’

  11. OwlPostMistress says:

Yeah I like that line too! Speaking of Tolkien, I like the opening line of “The Silmarillion”: “There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Illúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. ” There’s so much to imagine in that line!

  12. OwlPostMistress says:

I like the first line of “Pride and Prejudice” too! It’s a cool line.

    Here’s another cool opener:
~”The Horse and His Boy” by C. S. Lewis: “This is the story of an adventure that happened in Narnia and Calormen and the lands between, in the Golden Age when Peter was High King in Narnia and his brother and his two sisters were King and Queens under him. “

  13. pinkzombi says:

    GARRRGH.
I officially *hate* riddles. I am exceedingly poor at them. The worst thing with this one is that I’m halfway there (woah, living on a prayer) but that’s just not enough!

My brain hurts. I’m going to bed :]

  14. wannabeinhogwarts says:

    “Maman died today. ”
Opening line from The Stranger. Its just so plain and emotionless and perfect.
[And of course that book has pretty much the most Badass closing line ever. ]

  15. pyromaniacchica says:

THE INVISIBILITY CLOAK!! Are you people crazy?! It was a gift, Dumbledore gave it to him as a Christmas present.

  16. onebre says:

I was so impressed by the Graveyard Book, and so happy I was able to go hear Gaiman read it when he stopped in SF.

  17. loquaciouskook says:

My fave first line is from my fave book: The Diviners, by Margaret Laurence.
“The river flowed both ways. “

  18. nightfairytitania says:

My all time favorite opening to a book is Victoria Holt’s “Time of the Hunter’s Moon” which reads: I was nineteen when what I came to think of as the Forest Fantasy occurred. ”
My other favorites are the beginnings of any Tom Robbins book, notably “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues”. The “Single Cell Preface” reads: Amoebae leave no fossils. They haven’t any bones. (No teeth, no belt buckles, no wedding rings. ) It is impossible, therefore, to determine how long amoebae have been on Earth. :) )

  19. dorisherrm says:

Graveyard rocks! I’d want Hedwig, I think flying on a broom might remind me of riding a motorcycle with my kids.

    Thanks for the birthday wishes!

“It was a pleasure to burn. “

    Hello Moochka!!

  21. catchlove1 says:

    I GOT IT!!!!!

    WHERE DO I RIGHT IT?

  22. kk7872 says:

I know the answer to the riddle!! I think. Where do I give it to you??

  23. pantslesswrock says:

Well, along with socks from Dobby, and tissue paper from Dudley, and other sort of inane items, Harry, over the years, just happened to receive two of the most powerful magical items (the cloak and the stone) as gifts. Now if only Dumbledore had given him the wand as a Chanukah present. . .

  24. rainyelle says:

    GAH.
    I fail at riddles.

  25. wannabeinhogwarts says:
